A teenager’s prank on his mother backfired after she called the police believing he had been kidnapped and was being held at knifepoint.
She called officers after reportedly receiving a photograph of her son with a knife to his neck and messages demanding £10,000 for his return.
A social media post from Cambridgeshire Constabulary explained they received a call from the “frantic” mother who had been sent the messages from her son’s phone.

The post said: “Officers were dispatched and the boy was found alive and well, and after being transported to Thorpe Wood Police Station, he admitted that the messages were a prank.
“The boy and his friend were interviewed by officers in custody and the matter will be investigated.”
Police also added that it takes “hoax calling and wasting police time very seriously”.
The post ended: “Please ensure your friends and family members understand the consequences and seriousness of pranks, and hoax calls involving the police.”
